It’s cold out here, you gotta hold your own
I never knew what pain was until I was grown
I never miss my home boy until he was gone
But life goes on

I had a conversation with a tech at the hospital a few weeks ago. He had recently graduated and was waiting to take the board exam to become an occupational therapist. He was telling me the pros of working in this field and he seemed to really take pride in his job. One thing that he said that stood out to me was, he believed that people are born with the want/need to help people or not. It is a quality that is very important for a health professional to have.
I began to wonder if I had this quality. If so, how do I prove to myself I do? It’s easy for anyone to say it, but helping people as a profession is much different than helping people in general. Helping someone carry there bags is much different than helping someone shower or use the restroom.
I would like to believe that I have this quality. All my life I’ve had to do things I didn’t want to do, but I knew I should. I remember being about middle school age and my older brother was really sick. My parents had to work so I had to take care of him. Honestly, back then I didn’t get along with my brother at all. He was always controlling and mean to me. (imagine living with a bully lol) Though, I knew regardless of how I felt I had to make sure he was okay. I remember him vomiting, and missing the trash can I placed next to his bed. In my head I was angry, but I still cleaned it up.
I guess a side of me has a desire to care for people. I guess I would also like to believe that the desire to help people is innate.

Change is scary, change is stressful, and change is constant. You have people who avoid change and people who seek it.
One thing about change that can scare people is how they are perceived. It’s not so much the fear of change, but the fear of judgement. The fear of being labeled a poser, hypocrite, or in-genuine. To be honest, I used to think like that as well. I assumed when people deviate from the norm, they were merely putting up a front. Then I look at myself and see how much I’ve change these last few years. The way I talk to people, and the way I think has completely change, and in no way I feel disingenuous. Yes, I’m sure there are plenty of times people change to merely fit in, but let them be. Life is about finding yourself, and hopefully those people will someday. Hopefully I will someday as well.
